Fun with scratchboard

I am doing a scratchboard unit with my drawing class this week, and I had some fun showing examples of work that I had done in that medium. This piece depicting a milkweed pod and its seeds was one example. I'm also working on another piece that depicts squirrels ice skating. I'm not quite done with that one, but I will post it when I'm finished.

Baby celebration

Since our last few posts have been baby-related, I thought I'd continue the trend. Michelle's pencil sketch a few posts ago reminded me of the illustration I did a few years ago with a similar theme - however in this case the big sister is just annoyed :)

Congratulations to our new moms and moms-to-be!

Creating something entirely different...

So, for those of you who may have missed the big announcement...my husband and I are expecting our first child!
I'm due October 1. We're very excited. I go in for my first big ultrasound tomorrow. It'll be nice to see the kiddo, and I might pop back here to post a pic of Baby Huot if I get a chance.
I feel like I should have just copied and pasted Sarah's baby announcement from this past year and just changed the names. It seems that the Smells Like Crayons ladies have been busy creating, and not just art! (o;

On the drawing board ...

Sometimes a new baby can be kind of hard on the first kiddo.  It's nice when there is someone who understands.

Rough sketch... visit my blog to see the next illustration in the sequence.

Workspace

I haven't done much new work. I did finish up my office redo, I designed all the big cabinets and had a local company in Manchester (Alosso carpentry) build them for me. I really wanted something made of wood not particle board, I want these things to last forever!

Big Apple Visit

The courtyard at the MoMA

In the MoMA

Starry Night

Sorry for missing my last posting date---I was focused on leaving home for 5 days to attend the National Art Educators' Convention in NYC. I had an awesome time doing the things art teachers and artists like to do---visiting museums (MoMA, Whitney, Frick), listening to speakers (Peter Max, Chuck Close), hanging out with thousands of kindred spirits, and taking in the atmosphere of the city.

A sneak peek

Here's a tiny little piece of the project I'm currently working on, and will be working on for much of the weekend, since its due on Monday. My pencil sketch next to the final-work-in-progress section. Pretty neat! I can't say much about it now...but I will when I'm done and allowed to!

Owl Family Portrait

My sister is expecting her second child (and first girl) in June. Her baby room theme is owls, so I thought this would be a good time for Auntie to paint something for her future niece. I have some interesting slices of wood that have been sitting around my studio, and this is a great excuse to put them to use. I'm plotting out something along the lines of an owl family portrait on the wood (which I've already prepped with gesso.) I don't have much more to show you this week than thumbnail sketches, so keep an eye out for future progress on this project!

On today's drawing board ...

I'm working on a series of images from a PB story idea I have.  These are a few of the really rough sketches.
