Dog Days

We are getting to the middle of August and into those "dog days" of summer. As a teacher, I am especially aware of the waning days of summer vacation! Still, it's a great time to enjoy fresh corn on the cob, the slightly warmer ocean temperatures, and vine ripened tomatoes!

Thanks to the folks at www.welovetoillustrate.com for this new illustration topic for August. Visit them to add your own "dog days" post.

One last scribble...

After 8 years of meeting in-person and 6 months of blogging, it's time for me to say goodbye.

I'm leaving my dear Smells Like Crayons group, in search of more time to create art. I have enjoyed this last leg of the journey and will keep visiting and commenting to see what this talented bunch is up to.

I wish you all continued success. You can still find me at my own blog or website. Farewell my friends!

Coloring Together

Motherhood has been full of awesome firsts lately - and coloring with my now 1 year old son has be near the top of the list. I hadn't picked up an actual crayon for awhile. Knowing that I was showing him something for the first time gave me freedom to play, and make marks and forms unlike how I would if I was 'really' drawing. He started with hard little stabs at the paper, then wide single strokes, followed by zig zags. We're only at the beginning but it's been fun.I know I can avoid drawing because I'm afraid of drawing something bad, or wrong, or not quite what I had in my head. But put a child in front of me (of any age, I've always been the Auntie to color with!) and there's no place for ego or pausing to check google images for duck references. I might not make much time for 'real' art lately, but every day we make time for something better together. When I finally sit down at the drawing board (by myself), I think all of this will inform my work.
Oh, and the drawing above? That's what a giggle looks like. Wrap your arm around baby's belly, hold several crayons and scribble like mad. You'll see what I mean.

Gina Perry

I was long overdue for a fresh self-portrait, and what better time to do so than kicking off a shiny-new blog! I thought it also fit really well with this week's IF theme, Renewal.
My name is Gina Perry and I work as an illustrator from my home in New Hampshire. I'm learning to balance work and life (on one hip, see above!) and hope to someday be a published author/illustrator of children's books. I've had a lot of interesting detours along the way to this career, but I finally feel like I'm on track. That doesn't make the journey any easier and the women in this group have been my beacons since 2002. Now that we're online as a group I hope we can, in our own unique voices, be a support to fellow illustrators. So hello 2010, and hello Smells Like Crayons!
