In My Sketchbook

Above is a sketch for Illustration Friday's "duet."

I did a few other sketches after my initial sketch which you can see below (middle image). It's always difficult (maybe impossible) to reproduce the feeling of the original sketch.

Subsequent sketches always feel a bit stiff to me:

What are your thoughts on this? How do you resolve this?

  1. I totally know where you're coming from. The finished sketches may have more polish, but they never quite have the freewheeling energy of the original sketch. I'm not sure how to resolve it, because I haven't quite figured it out myself... :P
But I love your idea. The whisk and the egg are singing an ode to the cake they will become.

  2. Haha! Love these sketches Ann Marie! They make the perfect singers. (And I hate that stiff feeling after an original sketch, I just keep working them, until they have they're own spark too).

  3. I've never been able to capture that same feeling, either, so I usually use my original sketch for my final piece. I use the magic of Photoshop to clean up any lines I don't like and run with it from there. I have reprinted the sketch on nicer paper to use with traditional medium. I love this sketch, for sure!
